Nice Day at COCH

COCH is the orphanage in Kiev.  It is Cradle of Childrens Hope.  People here say it is the best orphanage they have seen.  It is a private orphanage.  Nellie and the boys got to spend a good long visit there on Friday.  I had to leave almost as soon as I got there to resume my work day (I'm working two days a week from Kiev).   While I was there, we saw the Boehrs, who by the way received great news today about their court date.  We've been hearing similar things, in that the timeline for moving our case forward is going quite fast.

I heard via Nellie that Anya was very engaging with Nellie and her big brother Zach.  Here are some photos:



 In photo # 2 above, Zach and Anya are riding a double bike.  Anya loved hanging with Zach.  Zach was getting a little tired of that bike, though.  In photo #3, Matthias is hanging with one of the kids at the orphanage.  He has found several he really likes hanging with.  He also really enjoys hanging out with the Boehrs when they visit.



Overall a great day.  What's next?  Well, we are hanging out in Kiev while the SDA and the Juvenile Services departments prepare their summaries of our adoption petitions.  When those are completed, our attorney will ask for a court date.  Then we start watching Perry Mason episodes on Youtube to prepare.  BTW, you get Youtube in Ukraine, unlike Netflix, which is blocked. 

The Dillers are now in town.  I'll meet them Saturday at 12:00 pm.  Sergei is taking them shopping and taking me to an electronics store (I hope he understands that part).  Our Wii has been out of comission.  I need a new power source for it to work in Kiev.

We have been sending Samuel and Anya to a therapist for about 6 months now.  Dr. Kelly does play therapy, creating a safe zone for the kids to express their inner frustrations.  Nellie, Zach, myself and Matthias are ready for some play therapy.  I remember something my friend Jeff told me about Misha, a boy he adopted from Russia.  He said 5 years after the adoption, the boy still lies, and blatantly.    The funny thing is that there are days when you really believe you are making progress.  Then reality hits, and you see what was thought of as progress, was merely a calculation, a behavior displayed to yield a desired result.  This stands in stark contrast to any child we have raised previoulsy.  Our biological children at home, are really sick of these manipulative behaviors.  We are sick of them.  Talk about draining. I forgot a Key Post

Just reading through this nice new format on the blog, I realized I left out an important day or two I wanted to pass along.  After the 10 day wait for the court approval of the adoption, you have an opportunity to get the children.  There was some concern about my taking Samuel home to downtown Kiev.  I took this as a slight, which was kind of arrogant.  They were thinking of my best interests.  Having Samuel downtown in Kiev in the apartment was so difficult. He would not watch TV, nor play with toys, nor eat most of what we tried to feed him, and for entertainment, he would stare at the washing machine.  The days dragged on, until I called Igor and asked if Samuel could return to the orphanage for a few days.  Igor, always nice, said "no problem". But this is besides the point.  The day before our embassy appointment, we were running between a police station in Kiev and another government office, and a notary service at breakneck speed....

Day with the Kids in Kiev

Whew, what a ride!!  It was a great day, and a day of prayer.  God has been abundantly present and constantly giving parenting advice.  God really cares for kids, and the the advice is constantly, patience, patience, patience.  The kids were so excited about everything today...naptime, supper time, going to the park, going to bed.  These are good kids, but as some have told us, especially in Samuel's case, they have no idea about things like family rules. I've also worked my last day in Kiev until we return, I think.  Mr. Mom is a demanding job, and I'm glad to have it.  The day started early with a trip on the red line with the Landry's to meet up with Victor.  About 12:15 pm, our coordinator showed up with the two little gems in downtown Kiev.  We hung out at the Notary, and I thought it was for the Landry's.  Then Victor had me sign something for the Passport, and the day was done.  The Landry's and us took the train to Maida...
